NIAID Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID) Antiviral
Evaluation Resources
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)
established the AACF under a contract with Southern Research Institute. The
NIAID, through the AACF, provides free and confidential services for suppliers,
who are interested in submitting compounds to be evaluated for antiviral
activity. The purpose of this program is to accelerate new antiviral drug
discovery and development. All proprietary rights are maintained. In general,
compounds are put through in vitro evaluations prior to the consideration
of evaluation in relevant animal models. NIAID encourages academic and
industrial investigators to take advantage of this free and confidential program
to aid in the search for new antiviral agents. A properly executed Screening
Agreement is required for both in vitro and in vivo evaluations
under this program. Click to view AACF Screening
Agreement.
The program is designed to examine pure compounds, but on
occasion will also examine extracts. The NIAID does not support the
fractionation of extracts, and the supplier must demonstrate the capability for
such fractionation before extracts will be accepted into the program.
Researchers worldwide submit compounds for antiviral
testing to the AACF. The AACF will, under the direction of NIAID program staff,
coordinate the compounds for testing at the NIAID’s participating antiviral
testing labs. Navigate the menu at left to learn more about the assays used to
screen the candidate compounds, instructions on submitting compounds, and to
explore the antiviral testing labs that are involved with the AACF.
